10 Bible verses about goals.
Scripture has a lot to say about planning, diligence, and aiming your life at something that matters. The pattern throughout: commit your plans to the Lord first, then pursue them with everything you have. Here are ten verses that shape how we think about goals — or as we call them, GoELs: goals aligned with the Creator. (All quotations NKJV.)
01 · PROVERBS 16:3
“Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established.”PROVERBS 16:3 NKJV
Goals begin with surrender. The order matters: commit first, then plan. A goal handed to God before it's chased is the difference between striving and building.
02 · PROVERBS 3:5–6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”PROVERBS 3:5–6 NKJV
Your understanding is a starting point, not the compass. Acknowledging God in every plan is what directs the path between where you are and where you're called to be.
03 · HABAKKUK 2:2
“Then the Lord answered me and said: 'Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.'”HABAKKUK 2:2 NKJV
Write the vision down. A goal that stays in your head stays vague; a goal made plain becomes something you — and others — can run with.
04 · PSALM 37:4–5
“Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.”PSALM 37:4–5 NKJV
Delight comes before desire. When God is the delight, He shapes the desires themselves — and then brings them to pass.
05 · LUKE 14:28
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—”LUKE 14:28 NKJV
Jesus endorsed counting the cost. Faith-filled planning isn't a lack of faith — it's stewardship. Count first, build second.
06 · PROVERBS 21:5
“The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.”PROVERBS 21:5 NKJV
Diligence compounds; haste bankrupts. Scripture connects patient, steady planning with plenty — and rushing with loss.
07 · PHILIPPIANS 3:13–14
“Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”PHILIPPIANS 3:13–14 NKJV
Paul used the language of goals — pressing toward, reaching forward. The ultimate goal is upward: the call of God. Every lesser goal should ladder up to it.
08 · COLOSSIANS 3:23
“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,”COLOSSIANS 3:23 NKJV
The audience of your effort changes everything. Work done for the Lord carries a different quality than work done for applause.
09 · PSALM 90:12
“So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.”PSALM 90:12 NKJV
Numbering your days is a wisdom practice. A year, a month, a week — measured time, offered back to God, becomes a wise life.
10 · JEREMIAH 29:11
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”JEREMIAH 29:11 NKJV
God thought of your future first. Your goal-setting isn't creating a future from nothing — it's discovering and aligning with the future He already sees.
